Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Women’s Equal Pay Day
august 28, 2024
60 cents for “all earners” (full-time year-round + part-time and part-year)
66 cents for full-time, year-round earners
In partnership with our friends, Empowering Pacific Islander Communities (EPIC) and National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF), Equal Pay Today will host a social media storm on August 28 at 2pm ET/11am PT to raise awareness of how NHPI women experience the wage gap and how they are often rendered invisible in mainstream conversations about it. Our shared hashtag for the day will be #NHPIWomensEqualPayDay.
For every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men working full time, year-round in 2022, NHPI women, working full time, year-round only were paid 66 cents. But when looking at all NHPI women earners (full-time, part-time, and part-year/seasonal), they bring home a mere 60 cents for every dollar earned by their white, non-Hispanic male counterparts. However, the biggest wage gaps experienced by NHPI women are hidden in data that aggregates all AANHPI people together. The pay gaps can only be addressed if we have full information on how it impacts all Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.
This year, the NHPI Women’s EPD social media storm will be focus on two primary calls to action, including:
1) Passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act, to provide new tools to help close the wage gap, and
2) Urging the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to build upon Statistical Policy Directive (SPD) 15 and its implementation, requiring all federal agencies to collect, analyze, and share public disaggregated information about the NHPI community.
